Boys Swimming

  1. Hi All,
Hope everyone is home safe and sound. I feel as though I am in ASCA/Fellows withdrawal. I plan on spending the rest of the day hashing out a few ideas and compiling all the notes from this past week. Feel free to call/e-mail with questions.

  2. Thank Meg, Yes it does feel as if we need to meet again..ha.

As for a preliminary reminder to all. Have your "stuff" into Meg by September 28.

The "Recruit, Retain and Train" approach is where your research should be starting. Please check your email for the excel spreadsheet that identifies what age group(s) your focus is on this first month if you haven't already done so.

Please stay in touch with everyone as you do your research. Don't be an "island," collaborate and share your plan of action with each other so we can all be informed.

    Happy Researching...stay in touch!

    Ad'm

  4. hey all, I have not gotten craig's paper, once I do I will send it out, remember he said he wasn't getting anything from us. I may call him later. I am not sure if anyone else is in the same feeling but I am still on information overload. Its been a tough few days to get my workouts done and try to catch up on getting notes done. I bet by the weekend we'll all be on here more frequently.

My one main thought today after getting an email from mike g was I would like to make sure we don't double research same exact area and don't double call or contact people when we do. It will take a little extra set up time but there are 11 of s and we can cover a lot if we don't overlap. Thanks to all of you last week was a blast!

  6. I am ready to implement the Saturday only practices. Question: do I tell the parents? The swimmers? Both? Neither? I would like to get feedback from the parents.

  7. Yes! Encouragement is certainly in the air...I agree Mike O, I'm trying to catch up on last week's work as well all while trying to get a foundation of where to begin.

I was going to give my boys a small survey this week just so I can wrap my head around where to begin.

    Three questions:
    1) Why do you swim? And be as descriptive as you can.
    2) Who is your "Hero?" And this person must be a real person (not a comic-book character) and Why?
    3) What do you want to be when you grow up? Why?

Also, I have a Parent Meeting with my whole division on Thursday. I'm actually thinking of taking 10 minutes to talk just with the dads and talk to them about me embarking on this research and bounce some ideas off of them to help connect some information from their generation.

Also, I have some "parent-athlete" information some of you may like to use and share. I put it in the online "Fellows 2010" folder. Let me know if you need help retrieving it.

  8. hey ad'm would you want to put all that stuff in a real folder? and did you get my articles? from last week? I can resend to you to put in a ASCA XI Articles to read FOLDER? they all pertain to boys and swimming.
I definitely think we need to use our local dads but also reach out to other teams in the area once we get set up.

  9. hey all
just looked over an article about the awesome 8 year old by guy edson. It says in there that the NAYS (national alliance for youth sports) did a study in 2001 about 70% of American kids who sign up for sports quit by the time they were 13. I have contacted NAYS (I think I may be a member but I couldn't locate my password) to see if we could get the study in full. I will keep you posted.

  10. Mike - let me know if you get a copy of that.....

Ad'm - With those three questions...in order to use the information we will need the parents consent to use the child's writing. The permission form needs to be basic, but broad and it needs to be announced that the stuff may be used in our study prior to the children filling it out.....if we want to use it......
    What are your thoughts?

  11. Kristyn - talk to the parents. Get them on-board. Sell it to them by focusing on building on the different strengths of the two genders or....whatever. Get them on-board. They could give valuable feedback about what they're kids think AFTER they leave the pool deck and the coaches. Parents are also the transportation and the money (making parents the necessary evil). Just my 2 cents

  12. Thanks! I will send out my parent email this afternoon...also, in reading that article Meaghan sent out, the book Talent is Overrated is a good read.

  13. Mike: My iDisk folder is malfunctioning, hopefully I'll be able to get it sync-ed up by the end of weekend. No need to create the folder, but thanks though.

Meaghan: Actually I was going to use the survey for statistical analysis. However, I totally understand that I'll need to get their consent (and parent consent) if I'm going to quote them in our study. Thanks for the reminder...I'll get on it :)

I'll be catching up on all the suggested readings this weekend...great work people! keep it up!

  14. Hi Fellows,

I just need to share something.....

I (in all honestly) just realized that being an adjunct professor at a College means I get access to their library.

Which means I have access to all the articles and publications that are both scholarly and related...and may give some answers to questions.......and not just in a google search kinda way.

:::: did a little dance of excitement::::
I'll share what I find - stay tuned.

  15. NICE Meg! You have the key to a ton of stuff! Go YOU! Also, as a heads up, I'll be surveying all of our boys on the team between now and Friday and I'll send out the results to everyone by Sunday.

    Keep it up Fellows!

  16. I wanted to know if anyone has specific questions that I should be asking anyone I interview? I usually go with the flow of conversation, but that might not cover everything.

  17. I think in our interviews some specific questions should be developed to stay "On Task" in a way. Does anyone have a list developed?
One thing that may be good - we need to stay in more club situations - seems as though most of the coaches we listed were college coaches. Can we begin to start a club list?

    Questions:
What different things do you do with boy swimmers?
What specific sets or practices have worked wonders with boys?
What things to do you do specifically keep boys swimming?
What things have you noticed boys to have difficulty with (swimming, values, role models, etc.)?
Is there anyone else you know that may be a good resource to talk to?

    that is just a start.
    Mike O
